A life working with written English: proofreading, editing and writing
A little more information about the Written English service.
I guess I could say I have been a proofreader all my working life. Pretty much my first task at my first job back in the 1980s was to check and correct advertisements about to be published in the then famous Exchange and Mart magazine. Even the simplest mistakes, if not spotted, could mean a refund, an angry client and a stern word from the manager. During a career in publishing that lasted more than 20 years, the task of proofreading remained a vital one. As I went on to be a journal editor and to run magazine publishing companies it become my task to ultimately check for the quality of what we were publishing.
Launching Written English
As the Internet took over from printed magazines, I decided to change career and trained as an English teacher. I learned more about the rules behind what was written and as many of my students had a first language that was not English, I learned the particular challenges that they faced in speaking and writing English. After teaching in the UK and overseas I decided to set up the service that I named Written English.

A different type of service
Written English is very different to other services you may find on the Internet. These are mostly agencies that generate enquiries which are then sent out to proofreaders/editors/writers around the world. The client never really knows who is working on their document or whether they are native English speakers. Also, part of the fee goes to the marketing agency.
I was determined to offer a service that had 100% happy clients and I realised that the only way to achieve this was to stay as a one-person service and do every task myself. So, despite receiving hundreds of CVs from other people I continue to do this in the way I started – offering a personal one-to-one service.
Most of my clients are long-standing clients or clients who have been referred to me by other people who have used the service. They value the idea of a long-term working relationship and often stay as clients for five or even ten years.
